andrea farmer contemporary art

Andrea Farmer is a contemporary fine artist from Chelmsford, Essex, England - specialising in abstract and land art.

In 1991, Andrea graduated from Havering College of Further & Higher Education with a BTEC ND in Graphic Design and A’ Level Graphic Design. In 1993, she graduated from the Kent Institute of Art and Design with a HND in Graphic Design and Illustration.

Andrea’s artistic journey then took several paths allowing her to gain valuable creative experience. She worked as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer whilst continuing to experiment with painting and other crafts.

In 2003, encouraged by an artists agent alongside her preference to work to her own methods without a tight brief or deadline, Andrea started to produce abstract artworks in oils/mixed media. This was something of an epiphany and Andrea discovered she had arrived at her final destination on her long creative journey.

Since then, Andrea has concentrated on producing several collections in her distinctive style. Landscape work remains her main passion and she has recently expanded on this to include a collection of Essex coastal scenes. These paintings are inspired by her love of landscape, nature and travel - themes that reoccur throughout her work. She favours a vivid use of colour - oil, ink and mixed media remain her preferred mediums. Gold and silver leaf also feature in many of her artworks adding opulence to her unique style of painting.

Professional quality stretched box canvas, canvas board, wood panels and 300gsm oil paper plus high quality artists materials are used to create artworks. Completed paintings are satin varnished to protect and enhance the colours. All artwork is titled, signed and dated by the artist.

Andrea’s paintings are held in collections worldwide with many private and corporate commissions. A member of Activate - Chelmsford’s Visual Arts Group, Art4Essex and Rogue Gene Collective. Andrea’s work is currently represented by Chimaera Gallery, Kent. Andrea is happy to consider private and corporate commissions.

ethereal and coastal landscape
The ethereal landscape paintings focus on the British rural and coastal landscape. In particular, the way that light across the land creates abstract patterns, reflections and movement causing changes to perceived colour vision. These paintings have a glowing, sometimes hazy effect with opulent colours and evocative forms that melt into one another, creating an ethereal atmosphere.

expressive abstract
The expressive abstract paintings are an expression manifested from the mind - an alternative and sometimes passionate, obscure and twisted view representing personal matters, feelings and emotion with regards to everyday objects in the natural world around us. Popular with private and corporate collectors alike, these paintings are vivid and energetic with sweeping strokes, precise mark making and visual impact.

floral & still life
The semi-abstract floral and still life paintings aim to capture Andrea’s love of flora and nature. These artworks feature flowers or plants in vases or vessels bursting with vitality. The texture and shape of the flowers are rendered in rich oil colour with expressive brush strokes and intricacies of pattern with texture and mixed media. Roses and tulips are amongst the artists favourite flowers. The still life empty vessel paintings concentrate on semi-abstract, figurative, simple forms with uncrowded space and unfussy lines.
